Graduate students presented their research at the Graduate Students Research Forum. Elena Castellari, an MS student, presented “The Fluid Milk Market in Italy: Consumer Behavior and Industry-level Brand Competitiveness, Tammy Warner Campson, a Ph.D. student, presented “Managing for sustainability: the economics of Marine Protected Areas”, Deep Mukherjee, a Ph.D. student, presented “Measuring Non-Market Benefits of Connecticut Dairy Sector”, Deepak Joglekar, a Ph.D. student, presented “Simultaneously Achieving Development and Environmental Goals: An Application of Carbon Taxation in India”. Charles Rhodes, a Ph.D. student in the Department, organized the day and served as Committee Chair.

Rob Montessi ’92 and Paul Luciano ’06 MBA ’08 visited campus to speak to students at an ARE Club meeting about how they’ve used their degrees in Resource Economics in the business world. Rob Montessi is a Vice President and commercial real estate broker with The New Haven Group and Paul Luciano received an MBA at UConn and has worked in the biofuel industry. He is also a former manager of UConn’s student managed fund.

Congratulations to Sylvie Tchumtchoua, the winner of the Pi Kappa Phi graduate award. She will be awarded funds for research support and a Phi Kappa Phi Medal.

Sylvie is also the winner of the 2009 Mitofsky Awards for Excellence in Public Opinion Research for "Modeling Associations Between Multivariate Longitudinal Categorical Variables in Survey Data". Her faculty sponsor was Dipak Dey. The award provides graduate students $1200 to conduct research during the summer using data in the Roper Center archives.

Hadley Rosen ’02 gave a well-attended presentation on the undergraduate program to ACES students on March 26th. Undergraduate enrollment in the major has reached record highs.

John Mott, M.S. ‘00 recently returned from a one-year voluntary assignment to Afghanistan with the USDA to help rebuild the country’s agricultural sector. An agricultural economist with the USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration in Denver, CO, John served as a USA Provincial Reconstruction Team agricultural advisor in the Khost Provincial Reconstruction Team. Congratulations to Umi Muawanah, the recipient of funding from the Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering (CESE). Umi will spend the summer in Indonesia working with non-governmental organizations conducting a field survey and collecting secondary data on marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs are a promising approach to conserving both the habitat of fish stock and feeding the poor in developing countries in a sustainable way.
